A promising and emerging field of practice, Nature Based Therapy, focuses on using nature to promote health and well-being. Since the Industrial Age, we humans have lost our meaningful connection with nature. In an effort to find a way to reconnect, and recognizing incredible results gained from time in nature, researchers began to examine how time in nature affects our mental health. A growing body of evidence based research now shows Nature Based Therapy is an effective treatment modality for many mental health challenges including anxiety, depression, and stress to name a few. Research suggests using nature based interventions, we can regain our connection with nature and ease troubling symptoms of depression, anxiety and tension.
Nature Based Therapy, after an initial office assessment session, takes place outdoors in nature. These sessions combine traditional therapeutic techniques and interventions with lessons provided by nature.
Interventions I use when working with clients in nature can range from Outdoor Sessions (walking in a green area, hiking in the local mountains, parks, or in a safe space of your choosing) to homework prescriptions for time in nature and follow up de-briefing.
There is no way to overestimate the power of nature to heal and bring about the peace you desire and you will find nature based settings a great alternative to the office setting if you so desire. Please see the links provided here to read some of the research conducted and articles written about nature based therapy and decide if it is right for you or for your adolescent child!
